After having decided on a story and written my synopsis, it is necessary for me to change my genre once more, as it deviates from the Romantic Genre significantly. And as I am happy with my story, and think it will work well as a short film, my only option is to change the genre. The problem lies in what genre my film actually fits into. The most obvious is historical- specifically World War One films, such as Passchendaele (2008), The Lost Battalion (2001) and All Quiet on the Western Front (1979). However, although my film is set in WWI, there are no real fighting, conflict or war scenes as in these. There will be some blood at the end, when Ernest is shot, so it will tick the box for blood and gore at least, but not a lot else. It is necessary therefore to look at other aspects of the plot to decipher a genre. The flashback scene is very romantic, but the fact that they both die makes it more of a tragedy- a romantic tragedy? Films such as Romeo and Juliet (1996), Moulin Rouge (2001), Paesschendaele (2008) and Titanic (1997) share similar themes and plots e.g. dangerous love ending in death and tragedy. Other films it could be compared to are Private Peaceful (unreleased, 2012) and The Green Mile (1999) in their depictions of executions. Bio-pics are also relevant as it is based on a real person.
